FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, March 6, 2025

ATLANTA | Today, the Georgia Senate passed three legislative measures to address school safety enhancements across the state of Georgia. The three measures are priorities for Lt. Governor Burt Jones for the 2025 Legislative Session.

“Each of these bills, along with the $50 million appropriation for school safety grants, will build on school safety initiatives I supported last year,” said Lt. Governor Burt Jones. “These are practical initiatives to achieve something every elected official should agree on – the security and well-being of Georgia’s students and teachers. I look forward to the House considering these measures quickly.”

Lt. Governor Burt Jones’ school safety priorities include the following appropriation and three Senate Bills:

Support Governor Brian Kemp's allocation of $50 million in the Amended Fiscal Year 2025 Budget for one-time additions to school safety grants. This budget was signed into law today.

Senate Bill 17 - "Ricky and Alyssa's Law" - would require all Georgia schools to install mobile panic alarm systems directly linked to emergency responders and state and local law enforcement.

Senate Bill 61 - would strengthen Georgia’s law so that attempted homicides and terroristic acts directed toward schools will be offenses for which juveniles will be tried as adults.

Senate Bill 179 – would require a transferring student’s academic and disciplinary records to be transferred to the new school administration within 10 days and requires the parent or guardian to be notified of the transfer within five days.
