2025 Legislative Priority: Expanding School Choice to Foster Care Families
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wednesday, February 12, 2025
ATLANTA | Today, Lt. Governor Burt Jones announced a priority for the 2025 Legislative Session to expand eligibility for the Georgia Promise Scholarship to biological and adoptive children of foster care parents.
“As a longtime proponent of school choice, I was proud of the Senate for leading the way to pass Senate Bill 233, the most substantive initiative in decades,” said Lt. Governor Burt Jones. “President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order to expand educational freedom and opportunity for families, and we are proposing the same in Georgia. The proposed bill will provide an additional resource to foster care parents as they make individualized education decisions for their children. In the Senate, we will always prioritize our children, families and parents and this proposal will increase the number of families caring for foster children, many of whom are some of the most vulnerable children in our state.”
The proposed legislation was introduced by Senator Greg Dolezal (R – Cumming) and will expand eligibility for the Georgia Promise Scholarship to biological and adoptive children of foster care parents. The Scholarship enables eligible families to use $6,500 in state-funded scholarships toward a non-public education of their choice. The proposed legislation would not change the existing program criteria, funding or requirements.
