Lt. Governor Jones Joins President Trump at Laken Riley Act Ceremony
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wednesday, January 29, 2025
ATLANTA |Today, Lt. Governor Burt Jones joined President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C. for the signing of the Laken Riley Act. This Act is the first piece of legislation President Trump will sign during his second presidential term.
“It was an honor to stand with President Trump, my Congressman Mike Collins, our Georgia delegation, and Laken’s family today,” said Lt. Governor Burt Jones. “Laken was a remarkable young lady who tragically lost her life, and while we can never bring her back, this Act will ensure that her legacy lives on. This law will ensure that future lives will be saved and illegal immigrants who commit crimes are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. The fundamental freedoms our citizens enjoy should not be extended to those who come here illegally and commit crimes. President Trump has made it clear we will hold these criminals accountable, and he has my full and unequivocal support.”
Under the Laken Riley Act, S. 5, the Department of Homeland Security is required to detain illegal immigrants who have been arrested for specific crimes. The Act was sponsored by Sen. Katie Boyd Britt of Alabama and received bi-partisan support.
