ATLANTA | Today, Lt. Governor Burt Jones and the Senate took a decisive step toward ensuring transparency and lawfulness in the state’s judicial system by passing SB 218. This critical legislation strengthens the Prosecuting Attorneys Qualifications Commission (PAQC), providing the necessary tools, infrastructure, and authority to hold rogue or neglectful prosecutors accountable to the people of Georgia.

“I am proud of this effort led by Senator Randy Robertson to expand on the great work of the Senate Special Committee on Investigations by fully empowering PAQC with the tools needed to hold District Attorneys like Fani Willis accountable,” said Lt. Governor Burt Jones. “For too long, a handful of prosecutors have acted as if they are above the law, picking and choosing which statutes to enforce based on their own political agendas. Our efforts send a clear message: in Georgia, no one is above the law. We are restoring the boundary between personal politics and public duty.”

"This legislation provides the much-needed resources for an independent mechanism to root out misconduct in our judicial system," said Senator Randy Robertson. "Thanks to Lt. Governor Burt Jones for his leadership and ensuring the era of prosecutorial immunity for political theater is over, and accountability is finally here."

Under SB 218, the state places PAQC under the Administrative Office of the Courts and secures its funding through the judicial branch. The bill grants the commission robust investigative tools, including the power to issue subpoenas and the authority to employ special investigators with limited powers of arrest to ensure the safety of commission proceedings.
