ATLANTA – Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan released the following statement after learning of the death of former Georgia state senator Leroy Johnson:

“Senator Leroy Johnson was a true public servant who devoted his life to the betterment of our state, both as an attorney, educator and elected official. He played a vital role in the civil rights movement, and demonstrated his willingness to serve others by becoming the first black state senator after Reconstruction. The Duncan family will say an extra prayer tonight for the Johnson family as they say goodbye to a wonderful husband, father and Georgian.”
