(Atlanta, GA) – Today, Lt Governor Casey Cagle met with the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce’s Environmental Policy and Sustainability Committee regarding Georgia’s ongoing water issue. Cagle updated the group regarding the state’s ongoing efforts, potential ways the legislature can respond, and solicited input from the business community.

“As we face a disappointing ruling from Judge Magnuson, we must be aggressive in our response on all fronts and work together as a team.  While we have made an impact with our conservation measures, state-wide water plan, regional water councils and efforts for reservoirs, there is more to be done.  I appreciated the time spent in discussion this morning and value the input from our business leaders,” Cagle said.

Cagle highlighted four areas where we must focus: litigation, legislation, negotiation and conservation.  He emphasized the importance of bringing a top notch litigation team to the table as well as the need to affect the issue legislatively on the state-level.  The state must move forward by encouraging regional water supply, cataloging potential reservoir sites and protecting Georgia from legislation that would further hinder our progress.  Cagle pointed to the fact that Georgians continue to embrace conservation measures as evidenced by a very minimal rise in usage since water restrictions were lifted.  However, Cagle emphasized that there is more we should do to implement further opportunities to incentivize conservation, while also ensuring adequate water supply.
