Safety-Net Clinics
Lt. Governor Cagle has long supported Georgia’s “safety-net clinics” for communities who come together to provide free or low cost healthcare to the less fortunate. These clinics help provide Georgians who are uninsured and underinsured a medical home. Georgia’s safety-net clinics were established in 2005 with the creation of the Georgia Volunteer Health Care Program (GVHCP). GVCHP helps provide an outlet for healthcare professionals who wish to donate their time to the uninsured and low-income residents of Georgia while receiving Continuing Education credit..
Since 2005, Georgia has worked to expand this program to 53 clinics that contract with the Department of Community Health in order to provide immunity to the healthcare professionals who work and volunteer within their clinics. The goal is to create a healthcare network that serves as a “safety-net” for individuals’ basic healthcare needs. This network will help provide a more common sense option for indigent healthcare, bring communities together to provide services, and keep individuals with non-emergent needs out of the emergency rooms.
